GEORGE ALCORN
I picked my research topic because I was interested to know what kind of everyday things we take for granted wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the African American culture. I was hesitant about working in a group because I’ve had some experiences with group work that didn’t work out very wee. I was also worried about how we were supposed to work on a project “together” when I have such a packed schedule already.
It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, we made plans to meet at my house because of my children, and everyone seemed fine with that. I told the group of my idead of making a web site to showcase our project, they were hesitant. Nichel said,” I don’t think this group (the class) is very [computer orientated] . And, Rachael said she didn’t think it was a good idea because she felt like they would be putting all the work on me because of their lack of technical computer knowledge.
So, I thought about it and decided the issue of how we were going to present the project wasn’t the most important aspect at the time. The next Monday, I had put together a list of African American inventors for us to split up. There were seventy-nine inventors. We took twenty each (well, I took nineteen)
Finding ten different sources, turned out to be harder than I thought it would be. Even when I narrowed the search to educational sites only, there were still some resources that wouldn’t be considered credible. After getting extremely frustrated, I finally decided to use our library’s Web site. Which was even more frustrating because as usual it didn’t have anything I was looking for. That is, until I broadened my search to African American inventors instead of individuals! That’s what I’d like to say, but know, the site wasn’t helpful, and one of the e-books I tried to view had been “logged out” so it could be corrected. I give up, about seventy-five percent of my sources referenced the original site I found in the first place, and apparently it’s the only collective source for the not so well known inventors. Also, as a side note "error 404; page not" found has become my living nightmare.
